Here a script which reset the Site ID of the old news stories to 0
Using the script:
1) Download the attachment
2) Rename the script to sitefix.php
3) Upload the script to your cadmin directory
4) Run this script from your browser e.g. http://yourdomain/cadmin/sitefix.php
5) Remove the script

Site ID 0 = Story is available on all websites
Site ID 1 = Story will be displayed on website #1 only
The CMS is supporting up to 99 websites in the same database. That means you can publish news at 99 websites from the same control panel.
That's the website number of your installation. Is this 1? If not, change the number to 1.
Please check also at Other / Websites (in cadmin) that only one website is installed.

Thanks, now I have the new screens, but the stories still haven't been updated at the site, only in cadmin. I think I found the problem, but do not know the solution. After clicking Edit/Remove, at the top (in cadmin) it reads Store/Site IDand for the story I changed and for the one added the Site ID is 0, while for the old stories that do appear it is 1.

It seems like that not all files from standard edition are uploaded.
I found at least two files:
1) templates/site_header.tmp.php (the template which contains the left menu) is from basic edition.
2) cadmin/index.php is also from basic edition
Please reupload both files.

Yes, I cleared the cache after the first failed attempt, but it didn't seem to make and difference. Will give support ticket.

Please try to clear the cache. Select in cadmin the "Clear Cache" option under "News"

I should have added that while in the cadmin it does list the new and edited stories, but when the site url is accessed only the old stories are there and the original home page configuration.

cupgrade.php is only to upgrade from an older version of standard edition. cinstall.php is for fresh installs or upgrades from basic edition.
I would recommend that you open a support ticket and provide the following infomation:
- Location of the installation
- cadmin login
- phpMyAdmin (if possible)

Philipp,
I should have added that while in the cadmin it does list the new and edited stories, but when the site url is accessed only the old stories are there and the original home page configuration. I've refreshed the browser, tried a different browser, and even rebooted the computer - all without any result.

Yes, I tried running cupdate.php and could not access the db so I ran cinstall.php again which told me the permissions I needed to fix, then I added all the config data called for and clicked SEND. Afterwards I wasn't sure so I tried to run cupdate.php, but got a message that I was already updated.

Did you upload all files?
Did you run cadmin/cinstall.php after that?

I upgraded to the standard edition this morning. After resetting the new permissions and entering the setup data I can again access the program. The original stories are there.
When I try to edit an existing story or add a new one (via cadmin) everything seems to go fine, but the new story is not added nor is the edited story changed. Only the original stuff from the basic edition is there. Also the home view is identical to the original.
