Putting articles in separate categories

When I add some content, I'd like to be able to categorize it as more than just news or an article. I'm looking for a way to have news, short stories, blogs, etc. on my site and have those categories appear in the main menu.

Any advice on the easiest way to make that happen?

You could create a customized main menu block with the quick menu builder. There is also a news channels block that will show links to all existing channels/categories. You can enable/disable the additional blocks under Blocks => Manage Blocks.
