The 777 setting allows any program/script on the server to write to the directories or files.
However, this is not a problem on a proper configured server with enabled safe mode or open basedir. In safe mode, scripts can only access files/directories owned by their user.

Hi
Just d/loaded the software and read that permissions need to be set to 777. My provider recommends againstthis on security grounds. I'm not an expert but do you think he's justified? I assume Storyteller won't work if the 'execute' permission isn't set.
