They will build automatically. There is no need to re-add anything.

It looks like that worked. But I have to 're-add' all the thumbs.

GD is an image processing library that is needed to generate the thumbnail images. Yes, php5-gd is the right package. You may need to restart the Apache webserver after you installed that package.

What is GD and how do I check if it is installed or how do I install it?
I just installed: php5-gd libgd2-xpm, but I don't know if that is what I needed.

It might be. Another possibility is that GD is not installed.
No, only Contentteller have a database based file manager
No there is nothing in the folder. I will chown it to that. Is that the problem?

I was just hoping there was a file manager built in so that I wouldn't have to do via cli.

Is there anything in the thumbs folder? You should chown (if you can) the folder to www-data:www-data.
It is no problem to delete files in the directory over cli or ftp. There is nothing file related in the database.

I know I can delete via the cli, but I don't want to fux up the DB or anything.

the rest of the data is owned by www-data, but the thumbs folder is owned by root, but everything in all of the images is 777 even the root owned thumbs folder.
Also, is there any way to manage the images folder? getting rid of the stuff that you don't need or accidentally uploaded. I know I can delete via the cli, but I don't want to fux up the DB or anything.

Is the /images/news/thumbs/ directory set to writable (777)?

I have noticed that thumbnails are hit or miss when I add them to a story. It is the same for the news and extended news stories. I'm not sure why. I can't say that I haven't had a picture display, but nothing on the thumbnails. Here is a post with the proper example: http://www.getyourgameon.ws/story.php?id=74
