Thanks for your suggestion. I already have a few ideas to enhance the settings in the upcoming 2.2 series.

You could just put this in one place, with checkboxes: Enable WYSIWYG for the following
(user can check what he wants)
x files
x articles
x file comments
article comments
x news comments
Easier than having to look for it everywhere (searching isn't the answer, especially if you don't search for the right thing and you don't find anything).

OK FINALLY found it - well hidden away and it took 5 different search attempts over 2 days!
Main/ Settings / Articles Settings (Menu on the left)
On the SECOND row of tabs at the top there is one caller OTHER
On that page all the way down a long page there is an option to
Enable WYSIWYG editor?

Actually, TinyMCE (the XenForo editor) is also included in Contentteller. All major modules have an option to enable the WYSIWYG editor (= TinyMCE).
Philipp thank you.
It would be useful if you ALSO tell me how to do this!
Obviously I did not find it before. I have searched again now you tell me it is there but I still cannot find it.
I would want it for all modules.

Enabling gzip compression should speed up the performance:
Settings => Website Settings => GZIP HTML Output => Yes

XF forum compatibility works more or less. Not quite sure on the login status and how to use usergroups but I can work that out.
XF design lookalike is possible - see
http://housemorgain.co.uk/library/index.php?/articles_pages/celtic,1.html - click Forums on navbar to see the design compatibility.
with thanks to Philipp for code snippets - the characteristic XF rounded navigation bar corners are not working yet but I'm sure that will work soon. Some other small details to do.
(I can provide a tutorial for others on XF design as I kept a record.)
Layout has excellent controls. Some are a bit hidden and could be brought forward more like moving blocks on the menus from one side to the other. But the control is all there.
Features. These are brilliant - a lot of what attracted me. I love the tight link to forums (select or create for discussion) with duplication on the end of an Article.
I love the variety of components Articles/ Content + forms/ News/ Links/ Files. I'd want to add a couple more like Quotes but I don't think that would be difficult. I love the preview and pagination on Articles and various other detailed controls.
Editor. This is what I don't like. The editor is limited as far as I can see and its controls are awkward and slow to use. Putting content up is just not going to be a pleasure. This could definitely decide me against CT because I don't want years of drudgery to publish 100s and 100s of articles.
I can't see how to upload images. Editing font size/ colour/ alignment is not instant on the same page.
I'd respectfully suggest looking at the bbcode edtor on XF which is lovely.
Speed. I'm not a coder so no expert on this but the refresh after I make any changes at admin level is slow. The whole page goes blank and re-opens. Both admin and frontend are not smooth in how they generate a new page. (This doesn't happen with other scripts so it's not my connection or my computer or browser.)
On balance I think this is a very good script indeed with some innovative ideas like forums for comments/ discussion; and a high degree of customisation; but the editor lets it down.
