Yes and no.
The article module (not the news module) of the upcoming version 2.0 has all requested features and seems perfect for this job. However, the article module in the current stable 1.8.2 release is limited and can not run standalone.

hello, I am trying to find a simple, easily customisable system for amateur writers to share their work. Most of us use blogs, but blogs organise entries by date-- i want to let my freinds assign entries to categories, and as chapters in continuing works. I want a permanent navigation table that generates as entries are made-- category/title/chapter-- and it would be great if a writer could assign a title to more than one category.
Can I do all of this?
This software looks fabulous in part because of its forum integration capabilities! I'd like to be able to customise individual frontpages per writer, in blogging style, but I can live without that if necessary...
