Right now they only show up on download.php
It would be good for Google indexing. Also, is 1.8.1 out yet?

It would be good for Google indexing

You could use the news block feature (Other/Website => NEWS BLOCKS) or I can write a small script to output the latest files on the frontpage. In this case please provide some example HTML.

Also, is 1.8.1 out yet?

No, it will be announced at the News & Announcements forum as soon it becomes available. I expect it tomorrow or friday.
