Is it for making an homepage?

Yes, Storyteller is a content management system that comes with news, reviews, files, forum, FAQ or page sections.

If I had a tutorials page, seperated into categories, would I be able to use ESSELBACH as an homepage, then have the latest tutorials to show on the homepage?

Yes, this is no problem. However, the successor product (Contentteller) is even more suitable for this task, after it allows you to run any of it's modules as front page.
