Double indexing pages

Is it possible to add a function returning a 404 error or a 301 redirect to the correct address when Google indexes it several times under of various forms?

for example:

original adres:  http://www.example.com/files/details/program.html
but Google also index:
 http://www.example.com/files/details/program
or
 http://www.example.com/files/details/program.html.
or
 http://www.example.com/files/details/program.html1
or
 http://www.example.com/files/details/program.html!
etc.

original adres:  http://www.example.com/files/categories/category-name.html
but Google also index:
 http://www.example.com/files/categories/category-name
or
 http://www.example.com/files/categories/category-name.html.
or
 http://www.example.com/files/categories/category-name.html1
or
 http://www.example.com/files/categories/category-name.html!
etc.

I think better than the double indexing (I think that Google itself is trying to crawl all) would show a 404 error.

These types of links:  http://www.example.com/files/categories/category-name.html. (with "." at the end) may appear on the forums, so Google is trying to index them.

Regards,
Michal

Working on it along with a few other search engine optimizations.

The same problem occurs when the file will be deleted from the site. Is not better information would be 404 for search engines?
