Contentteller 2.0 Test 1 available

It’s here Smiling Face. Esselbach Contentteller (formerly known as Storyteller) Test 1 is now available as free download for all registered users in the members area.

This is an experimental beta version not intended for use in production environments. This release will expire on 1st July 2007, you need to upgrade to a new build before this date or your website stops working. Support for this version is currently only available over this support forum. If you need full support (e.g. over trouble ticket) please use the 1.x series instead.

Test 1 is the first of four release milestones and 25% code complete. Each release introduces new features and modules. For example, Test 2 will contain the review and support modules.

Installation:

The first test release of Contentteller 2.0 is only available with the Windows installer. That means you need Windows as client OS for the installation. Later test builds will be made available also as classical zip/tar.gz archives.

What’s new in 2.0 Test 1:

Everything. The 2.0 series is a complete rewrite from scratch. Basically, 99,99% of the code is brand new. The idea behind the new 2.0 series is to address many known issues and design flaws of the 1.x series.

The following modules are included in this release:

Main
This module allows you to configure some of the website core settings

Content
With the content module you can add pages or forms to the content section of your website

News
The news module allows you to add news stories or polls to your website

Import
With this module you can easily import news from RSS feeds, email account, and newsgroups

Users
This module allow you to manage all user accounts

Templates
Here you can change the appearance of your website or add additional themes

Blocks
With this module you can add/edit side block to your website. 7 sample blocks are included.

File Types
The module allows you to edit the supported file types and permissions for file uploads

Stats
Here you see the latest web stats including page views, referrers, browsers, and bots

Online
A small module to show all current active admin users in the control panel

Additional information:

Search engine friendly URLs
Contentteller 2.0 support SEO URLs out of the box. You can enable this under Main => Website => Edit. The SEO feature is currently not compatible with the Microsoft IIS web server. I will try to find a solution for the next test release.

Universal Wrappers
With the Universal Wrappers you can use the user database of 3rd party products for the front end. The following products are supported in Test 1: vBulletin 2, vBulletin 3, UBB.threads 7, MyBB 1.2, and SMF 1.1. Support for additional products is coming in Test 2

WYSIWYG
The WYSIWYG editor is disabled in the default installation. You can enable it under Content Preferences and News Preferences

Caching System
The caching system is disabled by default. You should active this option only if you have a high traffic website after the output will be no longer updated in real time.

Templates
The templates are now stored in the database. In case you want edit them with your favorite HTML editor you need to export the templates to HTML/PHP files. These files will be written into the templates directory. As soon you finished your modifications upload the files back to the templates directory and import them again.

Upgrade from 1.x
I will provide a basic import script to import news and pages from the 1.x series in a few days. The final import system will be part of the Test 4 release. Other things such as the old templates are incompatible with the new system and must be redone from scratch.

Support for multiple websites
Contentteller 2.0 supports multiple websites, but the current installer doesn't. This will be fixed in Test 2.

Not bad but a few things have changed.

There will be most likely only 3 test releases. The upcoming Test 2 release will ship with all modules and is 80% code complete. I am mainly working now on the front-end after the admin section is almost done.

Philipp,
Will the aforementioned vbulletin integration require a specific version of the program? I currently run 3.5.x, should I upgrade to 3.6 or better wait if I want this working right away when CT 2.0 goes gold?

Thanks,

Julio

That would probably be me then =).

I was quite surprised when I installed the previous code only to find that despite claiming to "support" vB, you couldn't use your login for comments - silly. I've had to drop using the system until the feature is added, so am waiting for that related release before I can begin testing. It'll probably be a year since I purchased it before I can use it lol.

Looking forward to the next release, just hope v2 is someway finished before the end of 2007.

Meaning this feature should be included on the final version of ContentTeller? If that's the case, I can't wait!!!

Not that there is anything wrong with the comment feature of ST, but from the point view of a site owner I know I could benefit greatly from this as there is a well developed community in our forums that I would like to mirror to our frontpage.

Philipp,

Do you have any kind of plan for offering complete integration between ContentTeller's news module and vBulletin, so we can use the vbulletin engine/db for comments rather than contentteller's?

The end result would be something like this:
 http://www.techpowerup.com/?29901
http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=29901

If this goes beyond your plans for integration between the two software, how difficult do you think implementation of this idea would be? I'm willing to pay a developer (or you, if available) for this kind of integration.

Thanks for your help.

An updated Contentteller 2.0 Test 1 package is now available for download. This update fixes many smaller bugs and IE 6.0 compatibility.

This is a limitation of the Windows installer and IIS 6.0. The installer is not able to auto install ionCube loader on a Windows Server.

You need to download the latest ionCube loader for Windows from this page:
 http://www.ioncube.com/loaders.php

Then follow the instructions (Installation on a Windows Server) at the bottom of this page:
 http://www.ioncube.com/loader_installation.php

hi,

I'm using test 1 on localhost. This is the error I met:

Site error: the file C:InetpubContentTellerindex.php requires the ionCube PHP Loader ioncube_loader_win_5.2.dll to be installed by the site administrator.

Run install it has the same error.

I would wait. The updated version with the IE 6.0 bug fixes is coming tomorrow. Also, this version is currently only supported over the support forum.

I just updated the Windows installer exe with the latest fixes.

I also tested Contentteller 2.0 Test 1 under Windows Server 2003 (IIS 6.0) and it runs beautiful on that platform. I discovered that even the SEO function is actually working as long you run PHP as ISAPI module.

However, it looks like that another Test 1 refresh release is coming in 1-2 days. I noticed during my testing under Windows Server 2003 some rendering bugs in Internet Explorer 6.0. All other browsers (including Internet Explorer 7.0) are working fine.

There is a bug in this build that is causing a SQL error in the admin control panel if you use the database table prefix feature:
http://www.esselbach.com/thread.php?id=523

I will post a fix tomorrow. In the meantime install this build only without prefix.
