bit dissapointed with the filing of categories/channels

Hi,

I'm really dissapointed with this, i really thought CT was going to bring the CMS bang upto date, and in many ways it has, but how can you keep the basic category system in place? It is still based on category/sub cats for "articles", this is a big oversight imo.

News is much better with channels, but i still think this is highly unrefined and underdeveloped. for me, two major flaws exist with it.

1) If i create 100 channels (easy to do if you want a highly searchable website) i'm utterly lost on selecting the correct channels, and my staff will be even more lost. The admin should be able to categorise channels under a menu system. Maybe the abilty to create master channels, along with an unlimited amount of sub channels like:

Master channel ---- > ---- channel 2 ---- > ---- channel 3 ---- >
Graphics cards ----------- NVIDIA -------------- 8800 GT
------------------------------ ATI -------------------8800 GTS
------------------------------------------------------8800 GTX
------------------------------------------------------X2900 XT

For example, under a pull down menu, i should be able to choose a news category called "Graphics Cards", only then should all the relevent channels show up (which i would have linked to this category), not all 100. ANd if i create channel 2, channel three, these should show up in there own little predefined area, either as a pull down menu, or just tick boxes. This would solve the issue, probably.

2) The same name channels should be possible but under different master channels. Currently i can't create NVIDIA twice, which means i can't seperate NVIDIA motherboards from NVIDIA video cards.

This is a crude, undetailed thread, but i didn't want to make it long winded. This is just a basic idea that needs refining, but i really think the current system is unflexible, and it might be ok for basic websites, but not for more complex projects, where searchable content is recognised as the biggest requirement for success.

ok, hopefully i'll grasp this eventually as the power involved in tags is very new to me. I will try your way and see how i get on.

btw, i emailed you with that error message when writing in tags, so at the moment i can#t even test things.

Thanks for your suggestion but the code base is now frozen for the 1.0 release. I might add smaller features here and there but no longer things that require multiple changes and database modifications.

Both the categories and channels feature is not really meant to create over 100 categories. The idea of this feature is to create a search engine friendly way to list stories/articles of a core category. Adding over 100 categories may do the opposite after it would add so many pages to the website that the spider will have problems to indexing it.

For that reason have Contentteller also a tags feature. The tags allow categorizing items with multiple keywords. Unlike the category feature that will create archive pages for best indexing, the tags feature will create dynamic pages for each tag.

Another possibility is a combination of both features. Using the categories only for the core categories such as graphics cards etc, and the tags for detailed keywords such as NVIDIA or 8800 GT. So it would give you a good indexing the in the search engines and allows your visitors to easily find related articles without searching.
