Does Storyteller CMS allow archiving of stories and if so in what versions?

Can messages be set to automatically be removed from the main list (not archive) after a certain period of time?

All versions (including freeware) support news archives.

There are two display options in the licensed (1.3) version:
1) Display stories by days. This will show the news stories of the last days. The number of days can be configured in the admin control panel.
2) Display stories by stories. Here you can configure how many stories will be shown on the main page

The freeware version support only the second option with 20 news items.
